About This Activity

This collection of 11 hands-on balance and gravity STEM experiments give 2nd - 3rd graders firsthand experience with force and motion as they learn how gravity works, finding center of gravity, balance objects, and much more.

Each experiment starts off with inquiry: an intriguing question that gets kids excited about finding out the answer—like “What falls faster: a heavy object or a light object?”.

At the end of each activity, thoughtful wrap-up questions help kids gain a deeper understanding of their experience. There's also an easy-to-understand “what happened” that will make it easy to explain the science to your kids.

The concepts covered in Gravity and Balance include:

  • How gravity affects us
  • Slowing down the effects of gravity
  • Does a heavy object fall faster than a light object
  • Exploring motion, energy, and gravity in a pendulum (playground swing)
  • What is center of gravity
  • Can the center of gravity change?
  • The relationship of gravity to balance

Use Gravity and Balance experiments as part of a Force and Motion unit to build critical thinking and curiosity, and help kids deepen their understanding of key science concepts.

This unit can last from 3-6 weeks, depending on how intensive your science study is
